designed specifically for educators to use in mathematics lessons and assessments. TIMSS is the most comprehensive and rigorous assessment of its kind ever undertaken. Offered in 1995, 1999, and planned for 2003, TIMSS provides trend data on students' mathematics and science achievement from an international perspective.

Page By Page Books - Literature > Resources > Online Text Collections
Dozens of Web sites offer full-text versions of everything
from Shakespeare's plays to "War of the Worlds." However,
these versions are often long, cumbersome text files. Page
By Page Books now offers many of these titles in easy-to-read, single-page formats. Just click "Next Page" to move through the chapters. The new format makes it easy to add links to specific passages of your literature lessons and activities.

Math in the Mall Our work in popularizing mathematics through displays with hands-on activities began with the teaching of our course Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers (MATH 190). Our goal was and is to change the attitudes of student-teachers to mathematics. Our strategy is to prepare (and later let students prepare) various projects which would allow them to see a glimpse of what we see in mathematics: the beauty of it; the excitement and amazement upon seeing something unexpected; the mathematics around us; and the people of mathematics.

The Writing Den The WritingDen is an online interactive writing
tutorial designed "for students Grades 6 through 12
seeking to improve their English reading, comprehension,
and writing skills." English as a Second Language
teachers may also find this site useful.
The site has feature topics that are arranged into the
following topics: History, Canada, Nature, Science, and
Lifestyle. For example, the current feature topic is Do Wolves Deserve Their Reputation?
Each feature topic is divided into three levels of difficulty: words, sentences, and paragraphs. There are graphics to accompany the words and sentences category, and students can listen to an audio clip of the words and sentences as well. The paragraph category helps students who are learning to write paragraphs and essays.
The site also has a Tips-o-matic section organized into the categories of sentences, paragraphs and essays. In this section, students can look up grammar rules and writing tips.
A teacher's guide explains how teachers can use the Website in their classroom. There is a list of classroom suggestions such as the Lone brainstormer which uses WritingDen to teach kids how to brainstorm and overcome writer's block.
WritingDen could also be adapted for special needs
students and students who are learning English as a new language.

'Teaching Ideas' is for teachers who teach primary-age children (i.e. ages 5 to 11). Although it has been designed with UK teachers in mind, all ideas can of course be used by teachers around the world.
The ideas, activities and worksheets are organized according to a number of subjects (those covered in the English National Curriculum):
There is also an area on the site entitled "Time-Fillers". The ideas which fall into this category may fall into a number of subject areas, and they are ideal for use as short activities which can be used to fill a few spare moments during the day. The "Early Years" section contains ideas for use
with children aged 5 or below, and the "Foreign Languages" area has resources for those teachers who wish to teach a different language to their
children.
